~ RARE EARLY LIDDED 1800's WALL~SALT BOX~BEST OLD ORIGINAL BLUE PAINT ~ ~ ~ ~ F R E E S H I P P I N G T O L O W E R 48 ONLY! ~ ~ ~ For the discriminating collector, I'm delighted to offer this superb rare early lidded salt box in the BEST old dry & original robin's egg blue paint over oak I believe. I found this recently while antiquing in Maine and it was noted to have been discovered in a barn as many found treasures lay forgotten & untouched for years. It is dated to early 1800's with usage wear that is absolutely spectacular! This extraordinary piece is absolutely 100% original, featuring simple primitive form and is constructed with crudely forged square nails and no repairs or touch-ups to be found. It has an OLD break to a corner as I've shown in my close-up photo, but does not lessen the aesthetic or monetary value whatsoever and in fact, it is quite complimentary & adds to the character! This is SOLID, and heavyweight ½" thick wood throughout, and is HEAVY weighing 3 lbs, 5 oz! It has a single hinge (!!) in the middle of the lid that is wonderfully rusted (though sturdy still) metal or tin, and though it still functions well, the lid does not close completely, showing a slight gap at the closure and I think with a little Yankee ingenuity this could be easily corrected. The lollipop fashioned back piece or handle is a fabulous attribute of early primitive Americana. This would have (and, indeed was!) hung up by a heavy gage wire still intact on the backside! It measures 12 ¼" tall at the back, 7 ¼" wide and just about 6 ½" front to back. The compartment is slightly deeper in the back at 5 ¾" deep and 5 ¼" in front. Please have a good look-see at my many photos, and judge for yourself! The winner will be absolutely thrilled to own such a wonderful original early piece of Maine history! ~ For your convenience, insurance is included in shipping price ~ Thanks for visiting my auction... I try to post unique antique & vintage items just about every day. I welcome any questions ~ and do my best to answer promptly!
