RARE EARLY NORWALK POTTERY SLIPWARE REDWARE LOAF DISH

Slip decorated redware loaf dish 17 1/4" x 13 1/4'. Slip reads SOCKEY (sockey was slang for a type of salmon fish).with a band of slip going around plate ending with a flower of sort. American ca. 1800-1820, A very early and large form not found on many execting examples today, my guess Smith or Day pottery Norwalk Connecticut. This plate and 9 others came from 3 outhouses in New York City at the far north end of the Seaport Museum right before the restoration of the buildings. The first and earliest pit dated 1790's-1820 w this one came from, along with rum bottles and china dating no newer than 1820. The next pit had 9 other plates all Norwalk Pottery, and loads of broken stoneware, china, and sodas dating 1810-1840. The newest one about 1870 had no redware in it but loaded with bottles. Of course all the redware plates were broken. 6 including this one had all the pieces found. Yes, all the plates in the middle outhouse were easily idenified Norwalk pottery with the decorations. And yes this loaf dish has been perfessionaly restored at a price of almost 400.00. You would need a black light to find the repairs, a very nice job.I kept this plate because of the age and not being sure of the pottery house and a great go with with some of the finest early New Jersey and Manhattan stoneware that I had collected over the years. So, your chance to get a super rare plate that never comes around. Please ask question or email me for more info.
