A fine and rare piece of early American cut glass of Pittsburgh origin that dates to the first third of the 19th century.Unusual water or wine carafe with bulbous form and strawberry diamond and fan motif. This design was popularized by the Bakewell,Pears and Company after 1824, following their receipt of the silver medal at the Philadelphia Glass Exposition that pany artisans designed the cuttings to emulate contemporary Irish designs in cut glass.Their inovative and distinctive character brought immediate attention to the firm and brought them to the forefront of the glassmaking industry in post-Revolutionary America. This unique specimen of blown and cut glass was designed as an open decanter that was apparently never intended to have a stopper.Probable use was for wine or water to mix with spirits.Made of heavy brilliant blown leaded glass.Spherical base with an applied tapering fluted neck. The flaring base of the neck has a tooled octagonal overhanging edge that pronounces the joining of the neck and bowl.Thick wide-flaring carafe lip.Superb large strawberry diamond and fan cuttings done around the bowl center and ring of sliced and rounded panels around the base edge. The bottom has a slightly concave polished surface. The piece measures 7 inches high and 4 3/4 inches across the bowl.2 1/4 inch lip.Fine quality heavy flint, typical of Bakewell Pears work.May also have been intended for coupling with an inverted tumbler over the lip for use as a budoir "guest decanter".In mint condition, with only a small bubble within the lip to mention. The magnificent genie bottle shape is well enhanced by the cuttings done in large proportions on this carafe. An outstanding example of Bakewell,Pears and Company cut glass with their award-winning Strawberry Diamond and Fan designs.A rare open carafe of diminutive size and unusual genie bottle form. With deeply incised cutting of the finest order. This would make a terrific and unusual addition to a fine collection of Pittsburgh glass.Very early and very beautiful.Period 1825-1835.
