Description: The quintessential "find" for the avid collector of early 19th c. transferware, the platter offered in this auction is an early Spode piece and was produced around 1825. I am particularly thrilled to have found this, as in my opinion botanical patterns, and especially "botanically correct" depictions of flora, are among the most classy and elegant designs the Staffordshire potteries produced during their "Romantic" period! An additional reason for my enthusiasm is that according to Gillian Neale (Encyclopedia of British Transfer-Printed Pottery Patterns, p. 97) Spode's "Floral" is an "uncommon series" - yet I am, presenting this exceptional platter to you! Applied on a nicely potted, medium-weight earthenware body, the pattern is executed in the best shades of green you 've ever seen. Fresh and soothing to the eye, the main decorative motif takes up the entire well and depicts - I think - a variety of chrysanthemum in all its botanical glory! The surround is covered by a wide band of floral motifs and stylized florals and geometric designs in reserves. I can identify carnations, roses and a second kind of mums?Measuring 16 1/4" in length and 13 1/4" in width the platter is marked on its underside twice - once with an underglaze printed floral garter in green surrounding the name of the pattern and containing the pottery's name as well; and a second time with an impressed "SPODE" and the number "50" right below it. Condition: Condition on this piece is exceptional. T are no cracks, hairlines, chips nor stains or discolorations. The glaze is in superb shape as well, shiny and translucent without any crazing and with only minimal utensil marks which are visible only upon close inspection and under the right light. I have taken several pictures so that you can see the quality of the transfer decoration and the detail in the depiction of all flowers in the design. The only little flaw I feel I need to mention for the sake of accuracy are two very small and shallow flakes off the platter's inner rim (at about 12:00 o'clock as one looks at it). They are not dramatic and do not attract attention readily - they definitely do not detract from the piece's beauty at all. This is a rare opportunity for you to enrich your collection with an early Spode piece in pattern that does not show up very often!Thank you very much for your interest. Feel free to email me if you have any questions and please, take a minute to view my other ceramics auctions. I would also like to repeat that I don't send second chance offers so be suspicious if you get one.PS: Please be advised that I ship only once a week, on Tuesdays.
