No chips, cracks or scratches on the compote, like new, circa 1890. The compote measures 9" tall, 9.5" top rim diameter. This beautiful swirl pattern called Cascade was Fostoria's first table ware pattern according to my sources. Certainly one of the very first patterns. Later the pattern became Colony starting in the 1930s. I believe this is a true open compote, as t is not enough width to the inner top rim, behind the scalloped outer top rim, to hold a large lid. This inner rim is only 1/8" wide, and I would guess it would be around 1/4" wide if a massive thick lid was to be placed on it. Best I can guess at this time. The swan etching is officially called Feeding Swan , according to both Metz (Book 2) & Mordock , listing this etching as "Feeding Swan" circa 1880s and they show a goblet which does not appear to be in the Cascade pattern -- they don't mention any other items in this etching. But it is! Due to the rarity and exceptional historical value of this piece, I will insist on double boxing it for shipping. This will ad slightly to the shipping weight and cost, but necessary. I have estimated the total box weight then at 6 pounds, but it may be slightly more, so the auto shipping calculator feature in this listing may be slightly off, but not much. I will pack the compote, weigh, and then send an accurate bill including the actual shipping weight. Please email any questions.
