* 1940's General Electric ~ Model X-216A * CABINET: When I got this radio about 60% of the original finish was worn off so unfortunately a refinishing was in order. The good news is the cabinet is solid with no veneer damage and in excellent condition. This fairly rare GE radio dates to 1939,1945,or 1947 depending on what sources you go by. The 1st detail that really got my attention with this classic design was the impressive pillar like sides and the gorgeous multi-walnut veneers used throughout. In the 20+ years I've been in the radio business this is some of the nicest walnut grains I've ever seen and with the bookmatched crossfire cut strip w the knobs are located it's every bit as nice as an Ingraham made cabinet. Since 1987 I've been collecting, restoring,& refinishing antiques & collectibles such as tube radios, victorian furniture, victrola's,and many other classic items from the past. And Although I use different refinishing techniques such as hand-rubbed lacquer,Tung Oil,Satin,& Antique Refinishing Oil....I really wanted to give this classic a nice natural antique finish,so I decided on what I use when restoring victorian furniture, wood instruments,or gun stocks for local antique dealers. This process takes the longest as t's no spray cans of lacquer involved....instead I use several hand-rubbed coats of blended linseed oil & varnish taking one week just for this paticular stage. And since I dont use any darkend stain to begin with...only natural clear stain, the linseed oil brings out the natural glow of the walnut grain so what you see is the true veneer color and not some toner or dark walnut stain applied. As someone who really appreciates the different types of natural wood color and grain I wouldn't think of covering up this gorgeous cabinet. The trim and pillar tops were originally done in dark brown toner but I decided to do them in black lacquer which gives it a very nice deco look and I think it blends much nicer with the green glass dial scale & the copper/gold diamond pattern grille cloth.I took many pictures under several different light conditions so you can see just how beautiful the finish is. If your preference is an authentic looking refinshed antique piece then you should be very pleased with this type of hand-rubbed finish. ELECTRONICS: The electronics have been fully restored to excellent playing condition on all 3 bands(AM,SW1,SW2). Chassis cleaned inside & out, several tubes replaced,ALL capacitors replaced,plug/cord,& (2)new dial bulbs(looks great lit up!),and a new reproduction grille cloth added. This model also has (2) Shortwave Bands besides the AM(BC) band and I was just listening to many stations around the world this morning like(Radio Austria,South America,Italy,Japan, and several others. T's four bakelite knobs and the on/off knob(far left) is also a variable tone control as well for treble or bass. Next to that is the volume, tuning, and 3-way band knob. The radio measures fairly large at 17"wide x 11"tall x 8.5" deep and is a very impressive piece when seen in person.
