**Rare Monumental Document Box ~ Dated ~ 1905** character of the Box The box is a rustic monumental item that originates from the Midwest. Not many document boxes from the midwest still exist. This box was handcrafted by W.A. Smith--1905--Carthage, Mo. The original surface, paint and lettering is remarkable. It also retains its original brass tacks on the edges with all original hardware. The handle and plate are handforged and the patina is just remarkable. It did appear to have a tray on the inside that is now missing. On the ends of the box is the hand painted letter S for we think for smith. The box is in its original dark green color. The brass lock on the front is that of early origin as well. W.A. Smith (Williams A. Smith) a general labor in 1910 was born in the state of Illinios in 1854, He then married his wife, Mary E. (Colly)Smith, in 1875 in Illinios. They later moved to Jasper County, Missouri in and around 1880's. We are uncertain as to the reason for moving. Mary E. (Colly) Smith was born in Illinios in 1859. He father was James M. Colly of Illinios. Mary died in the year 1912, just shortly after the box was constructed. The box being constructed for probable reasons of holding their wills, deeds and other valuables.Mr. WA Smith passed away shortly t after in 1914 of Jasper County, Missouri. Carthage is the County seat of Jasper County, Missouri. The aforementioned information was taken from the 1910 census records and 1920 death records.
