Very rare Elwood Haynes stellite pen knife. Haynes invented stellite in 1898-1899 and received patents in 1907. I've read that this tungsten-cobalt alloy was first used in knives in 1910 and last used in pocket knives on April 1920 (Levine's 4th pg. 25). Goin's says it was a chromium-cobalt alloy. The stellite was made in the barn-like laboritory behind Elwood Hayne's house in Kokomo, Indiana. In the beginning, two firms made the knives for Haynes. They were all mail order knives. Later, t was a stellite factory built in Kokomo. The reverse tang on the main blade is stamped "LARTER". Larter, a company that manufactures and sells exclusive jewlery, must have special ordered a number of knives from Haynes. The bail on the knife is marked 14 K with some kind of embellishment to the right of that. T is some noticable damage on the small blade end on both handles. I do not know what caused it. Please see the pictures. With tricky light it is hard to properly show in pictures. Blades are in nice shape. They are tight and have great snap for a pen knife. As seen in the pictures, both blades are marked. Very hard to find old knife. Buyer to pay $5.00 priority shipping and handling to the lower 48 states only. Actual cost insurance is required on this item. I accept money orders and cashiers checks only. NO PayPal or personal checks. read more
