This is a beautiful Staffordshire Ironstone "Boston Mails" razor box or toothbrush holder with black transferware scenes of the Gentleman's cabin, dating from circa 1841. All bright areas and lines are merely light and flash reflections and not defects. This design represents the historical mail ship service between Liverpool, Halifax and Boston. The steamship line I believe was founded by Cunard who at the time was an agent for the East India Company in Halifax. This piece was made by James and Thomas Edwards. The pattern is discussed on page 57 in "Historical Staffordshire American Patriots and Views" by Jeffrey B. Snyder. I have seen plates, platters and jugs in this pattern but never a razor box. The box measures approx. 7 5/8" by 3 1/4" and approx. 3" in height to the top of the finial. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or crazing. The Pearlware glaze is bright and shiny. I don't think the piece was used very much. T are the usual mold and glaze irregularities of antique Staffordshire pottery. The box is marked "Porcelain Opaque" on the underside of the lid. Buyer pays shipping, insurance and $2.00 for packaging. Please email, if you have any questions. Thanks for looking.
