AN EXTREMELY RARE SIZE & A FANTASTIC FIND!!! This is for the very serious collector... When & w was the last time anyone saw an early Military and/or Naval related image of this size?... More than likely, only in a museum display case!!! Our own pictures due not due the piece proper justice... A Stunning 1/2 PLATE Ambrotype Image, identified as being that of Civil War Naval Lt. Bruce Elfast of Rockland, Maine & his lovely bride!!! This piece was obtained by us a number of years ago, thru a very reputable dealer in Maine, who in turn had purchased this image directly from one of Elfast's family descendents!!! Lt. Elfast was an early member of a family with a very long lineage of Maine Sea Going Captains among it's descendents. Accompanying the image is 'limited' provenance that was obtained from the dealer in Maine when we originally purchased it. We put forth 'maximum effort' inorder to obtain for the winning bidder, a more indepth Military Record for Lt. Bruce Elfast. Unfortunately, we came up 'empty handed' due to t currently being extremely limited Civil War Naval Records on file. What is 'known' is that this ambrotype originally came out of the old Elfast family home in Rockland, Maine. Specifications & Overall Condition: We would rate this image to be in stellar, near perfect to excellent overall condition!!! Half Plate size of 4 &1/4 inches by 5 &1/2 inches Image is very sharp, yet t is some light crazing & spotting over/around his bride. Original 'stamped' velvet lining, metal matting & glass, also appears to have it's original seals!!! Encased within a full Gutta Percha 'Union' Case with a very early repair, using a peg nail, in the lower interior hinge. All in all... A striking image that would be a very fine, 'once in a lifetime' acquisition & addition to any Civil War Naval related and/or early historical photographic collection...
