These are by the famous J.B. Hirsch Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut, one of the famous old foundries producing bookends in the 1930's. Hirsch did a series of bookends for the american public based on the high end ivory faced and bronze art deco figurines and statues coming out of Paris by designers such as Chiparus and Gerdago. Ladies were particularly popular in this genre. This is a pair of dancing ladies that hails back to the victorian or edwardian era. They show a lady from about 1880 to 1910 at the latest in traditional mutton sleeve ruffled sleeves and a rather form fitting risque gown and large sunbonnet. She has little gold dancing slippers and gold double collar and buttons. She has a handpainted face with red lips and blue eyes and light blond golden curls The face is separately cast and made out of ivorene or celluloid or imitation plastic or bakelite. The statue itself is spelter or pot metal and the bases are slate or crushed black stone, a Hirsch specialty. While these are unsigned, as all these Hirsch ladies were, these are clearly made by them due to the factors I have listed. And these are guaranteed old, genuine and original. They measure 8 inches tall and weigh a hefty 9 pounds the pair. The value of these often lies in the faces, so prized by antique and vintage bookend collectors, and these are pristine with no shrinkage or cracks and the polychrome painted features intact.. Very fair of face and form, this lady. The deep dusky rose of the dress is lovely also. These are in very nice condition with only a little roughness on the base edges and a few tiny areas of paint loss on the lady's dress. These are very rare, especially in this condition. The star of any vintage cast metal bookend collection. Thanks for looking and please see my other auctions for more antique and vintage bookends and doorstops that I will combine on shipping whenever possible.
