Rare Vienna Secession era bentwood beech chair by
Jacob & Josef Kohn, circa 1902-1916, based on the label. This chair was designed by Gustav Siegel (1880-1970), a designer hired by J & J Kohn in 1899 at the age of 21, to head their design department. He was a cabinet maker and student at the Vienna School of Applied Arts at the time. This fact speaks volumes as to his design genius. The chair design was part of the installations at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 held in Paris, France, for which Siegel helped Kohn win the gold medal ahead of Gebruder Thonet. Original finish. Signed w/ paper label underneath along the seat rail. This chair form was later copied by Otto Wagner for his Postal Savings Bank design of 1904-6. for which he received great acclaim. Siegel was a student of Josef Hoffmann. Very fine condition. Some minor wear to finish. Original brass feet (sabots). Appx. 30" X 22" X 22". Solid condition. The reproduced photo show is from the book: "Against The Grain", put out by the Art Institute of Chicago.
