These are just wonderful and so rare. First of all, they are absolutely guaranteed old, genuine and original. They are egyptian revival art deco at it's best, circa 1925, and nothing is more egyptian than an ornate prize racing camel!!! These are huge, the size of doorstops and they were at times in their existence. Judd Foundry was around from the mid 1800's to about 1929 at the latest. These are by Judd, signed with the four digit Judd number on the back. But Judd made doorstops long before they made bookends and this was the casting. You see these once in a while sold as a doorstop but it is so rare to find them as a matched set of bookends like these and in such fine condtion. The polychrome painted finish over cast iron is wonderful. The camels are true to life, a desert brown, with darker brown in areas. They wear a tasselled and fringed and embroidered saddle and bridle, in jade green, and powder blue and gilded bronze. They even have the crescent moon and star of islam on the saddle. Made the very old way, in two separate castings, with the camel attached to the base with two giant single slotted flat head original screws in back. These measure 7 inches long by 6 inches high and weigh 9 pounds the pair. Again, a very rare pair of art deco original condition signed egyptian revival polychrome bookends or twin doorstops. Thanks for looking and please see my other auctions for more antique and vintage cast metal bookends and doorstops that I will combine on shipping whenever possible.
