is a fine short sword ordered from Karl Eickhorn in the early 20th century for a graduating officer of Uruguay's military academy. This must have been a rather important graduate of the officer's school both because of the quality of this short sword ("espadín" in Spanish) and because of the initials, "CRS", that were engraved on the pommel (something I have seen only a few times on these short swords in Uruguay). All fine swords for the Uruguayan military were ordered from known sword makers in Europe, and especially from those in Solingen, Germany. The blade has its original nickel finish and is in wonderful shape with just a few small scratches and signs of wear. The hilt is made of German silver (a type of nickeled brass often seen on the furnishings of old pistols) and shows some wear while still retaining all of its detail. The hilt at one time was plated with yellow brass, some is still left in the cracks - why someone would cover over German silver with brass is a puzzler - my guess is that because all the other Uruguayan espadíns that I have seen have had brass hilts the brass plating was done, most likely in Uruguay itself, to conform this quality short sword to local military tradition.
