I recently got this sword with a bunch of others at an estate sale. I am NOT an expert on swords but am trying to learn as I go. I bought some reference books and checked with a few collectors and 's what I learned about this one: This is a 4 th -degree sword and scabbard from the Knights of Columbus, which is a large Roman Catholic men's fraternal and service organization. The 4 th Degree was instituted about 1900 and these swords with the eagle on top were the first swords used. They are quite rare, I am told. The sword's blade is about 27 ½ inches long. It has etching on both sides. The front side has the words Knights of Columbus on it in Old English lettering. The back side has lots of leafy designs and a coat of arms of the organization. T is gold plating around the etched parts. T are no nicks in the edges and no rust. The metal parts of the handle are all silver plated. The handguard has a large shield in the middle with the coat of arms. Each side has ivy designs on it. The top part is an eagle with extended wings. The handle part is black wood. The scabbard has no dents and the finish has a smooth silky silvery color from age. The little piece at the top has a cross inside a wreath. The bottom piece has a shield and an axe on it. T is no name of a maker or of an owner on it anyw I can find. I accept bids ONLY from domestic read more
