PLEASE OUR ASSORTMENT OF BOOKS & CATALOGUES ABOUT ASIAN ART! This excellently crafted Boddhisatva Manjusri "jam dpal dbyaris" (transl. "the gentle ruler") is portrayed in precious attire seated on a lotus throne. This important sculpture is made of terracotta, a material very rarely used in Sino-Tibetan art of the period! The deity is shown in the Vajraparyankasana position with crossed legs and his hands are forming the Dharmacakra Mudra. This Mudra position represents the turning of the wheel of the law. Dharmacakra Mudra is formed when two hands close together in front of the chest in Vitarka having the right palm forward and the left palm upward, sometimes facing the chest. Executed in colorful lacquer and hand painting, we see beautiful lotus blossoms unfold near Manjusri's shoulder. On his head we find an intricate headdress richly adorned with precious jewelry and his green gown is decorated with golden floral patterns. His earlobes are elongated and he is wearing matching earrings and necklaces. He boasts beautiful facial features and an utmost well-meaning and enlightened expression. Manjusri is a Boddhisatva of the tenth stage and known as a master of wisdom, mental perfection, infallible memory and eloquence. His sword however is also referred to as the "sword of discriminating wisdom". Manjusri is considered to be the mother and father of all Boddhisatvas and stands as their spiritual friend. A fascinating and rare example of Sino-Tibetan terracotta art! PLEASE ALL ASIAN ANTIQUES I AM CURRENTLY LISTING ON EBAY! Good luck in bidding and please see my other auctions on Ebay now.
