Rare Large Rectangle FINE Micro Mosaic Brooch
This auction is for an outstanding example of a mid to late 1800's Fine Micro Mosaic brooch of St. Peters Basilica located in Vatican City. This brooch is so fine you can see the small people and the water in the fountains ! Noticed how the artist who made this piece used the smallest of stones to create this scene. No large gaps between the stones ! And you'll see how he used a combination of light and dark colors to create the illusion of shadows on the pillars. A look how the sky goes from a whitish color near the low horizon and as it goes up he turns it into blue ! Absolutely incredible. This must have taken quite awhile to create. This is a somewhat rare piece due to two things. First of all it's size. This is not your typical smaller type mosaic, but it actually a nice size. This brooch measures 2" x 1-5/8". Many mosaic broochs will measure under an inch or close to it, so this one is larger than most. The second important thing is that it is a rectangle and not round. This provided the artist with a wonderful pallet in which to create this breathtaking scene of St. Peters Basilica. The brooch starts with a gold colored medal. I would venture to guess that it is a gold filled or a very low karat gold, but I don't have anyway of testing it. Inside this frame is a piece of black onyx carved out to hold the Fine Mosaic pieces. This pin has suffered from poor storage over the years, and the onyx shows cracking in many places. But it is whole and not loose so with careful handling, this beautiful Fine Micro Mosaic Brooch will last for years to come. You'll notice I also keep refering to this brooch as Fine Micro Mosaic. Having looked at many pieces recently available on eBay, many of them has large piece of solid color mosaic to make up the scene, with large gaps between the stones. This piece is so much better. With virtually no gaps between the stones, the detail is magnificent. Some so in fact, that viewing this pin from afar, it looks like a mini portrait. As for the age, I would have to say that this piece would date from between the 1860's to the late 1880's, and was probably made in Europe somew If you collect Micro Mosaic jewelry, this vintage Fine Micro Mosaic could be the highlight of your collection. And for you collector's of items pertaining to Vatican City, this stunning piece of architecture is magnificently recreated in miniature on this rare brooch. This piece would make a stunning addition to anyone's collection ! The Basilica of Saint Peter, officially known in Italian as the Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano and colloquially called Saint Peter's Basilica, ranks second among the four major basilicas of Rome (St John Lateran, St Peter's, Santa Maria Maggiore and St Paul outside the Walls). It is the most prominent building inside the Vatican City. Its dome is also a dominant feature of the Roman skyline. Saint Peter's is also incidentally the patriarchal basilica of Constantinople was the Lateran Basilica is the patriarchal basilica of Rome. Possibly the largest church in Christianity[1], covers an area of 5.7 acres (2.3 ha) and has a capacity of over 60,000 people. One of the holiest sites of Christendom in the Catholic tradition, it is traditionally the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, first Bishop of Antioch, and later first Bishop of Rome. Although the New Testament does not mention Peter's presence or martyrdom in Rome, ancient tradition holds that his tomb is below the baldachino and altar; for this reason, many Popes, starting with the first ones, have been buried t Construction on the current basilica, over the old Constantinian basilica, began on April 18, 1506 and was completed in 1626.Although the Vatican basilica is not the Pope's official ecclesiastical seat (Saint John Lateran), it is most certainly his principal church, as most Papal ceremonies take place at St Peter's due to its size, proximity to the...
