This fine and rare French singing bird cage automaton measures 21 inches high and 10 1/2 inches wide at its base. The automaton is in working order, with the bird chirping and turning its head. (The automaton also includes its original key.) In general, the cage is in fine condition, with most of the gilding on the decorative frieze at the bottom intact and a nice overall patina to the metal in general. The inside of the cage is a bit dirty, as one would expect, but the bird still retains its plumage, although these may not be the original feathers. The automaton, which is stamped "France" twice on its base, likely dates from the late 19th century, although these items are quite difficult to date precisely. Although t is no maker's mark on the piece that I can find, I have seen other automata which suggest that this is probably the work of Bontems of Paris, a firm that was especially well known for these mechanisms. (I would be pleased to hear from other eBayers who might have additional information on the manufacturer.)Large bird cage automata measuring 21 inches are quite uncommon on the market, and this is a fine working example in good, original condition.
