RARE -VINTAGE LONG NECKED ROOSTER PIE BIRD (PIE VENT - PIE FUNNEL) This vintage piece must be rather RARE. The only other one I could find like it on the whole W orld W ide W eb was at: /newsletter/25_apr2005.htm . T it says that the Long Necked Pearl China Co. Bird is among the most collectible of Pie Birds. Then it shows a picture of it, which looks EXACTLY like this one - except for the color on the Beak, Base and Wings. It said that one SIMILAR to this "sold last month for $425.00." You can see for yourself on that web page. T is little difference that I can see other than colors. This has been part of my collection for many years. If someone knows of any other possibility, please contact me immediately! This is 5 1/4" Tall. It's about 2 1/4" at the widest area. Also, t appears to be a spot of Blue Glaze on the Rooster's front "Gobbler" under the beak w it should be all white. This was definitely manufactured that way. You can see it in a few of the pictures. Otherwise, t are no chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. Only Normal Crazing from age. This piece is in EXCELLENT Condition! ONE reason the LONG NECK ROOSTER is so RARE: because so many have broken over the years. So, not too many still exist intact. These were used in the center of baking pies to prevent boil overs. I am sure that many were broken during the process of baking or when the pie was cut to be eaten. Pies were also kept in what is called a "Pie Safe". This is usually a wooden furniture piece (circa 1800's) with shelves covered with tight-knitted wire/screen to keep the bugs away while the pies cooled. Some Pie Safes were built-in to the Pantry area of old houses. We have BOTH of these Pie Safe types in our Historic Home built in 1899. This Long Neck Rooster Pie Bird or Pie Vent is in EXCELLENT CONDITION with normal crazing from age. You can see all the detail in the pictures. I took several pics from different angles. I do not hide anything. I do not see any Production Marks of any kind. However, I do not claim to be a Pottery or China expert. Tfore, I welcome any comments please! On the RIGHT SIDE of this Rooster's Beak I can see w the Blue Glaze is welled up a little thicker. Perhaps this is w the Blue drip spot came from down on his "Gobbler". ? (I don't rememeber what that thing is called..LOL!...I guess I'm thinking about Turkey instead of Rooster!) Just wanted to add that little info in for accuracy reasons.
