Offered is a very good American silver soup or punch ladle by the scarce District of Columbia maker Charles Pryse. Pryse is noted for having started his career in Baltimore, and having made in 1824 a gold medal presented to the Marquis de Lafayette on the occasion of his visit to the city. Perhaps using this distinction as a spur to his reputation, Pryse had relocated to the Nation's capitol by 1827, and in that year was listed as a working gold and silversmith on Pennsylvania Avenue. His work is quite scarce, and this is the only large server I have seen bearing his mark. This piece is quite lovely and is in excellent condition, with no dents, dings, splits or repairs. The light scratching to the surface indicates ordinary, careful use. This ladle is well made and measures approximately 13 inches in length. The bowl is approximately 3 1/2 inches across, and holds a lot of liquid. The beautifully engraved period script owners' initials appear to be AWC. This piece has chamfered shoulders often found on pieces from the second quarter of the 19th century from the mid-Atlantic region, and has an unusual heel. The piece bears two clear maker's marks for Pryse, one of which appears to be overstriking a misstrike of the same mark. All in all a very fine example of early Southern coin silver from the heart of the Republic! Winning bidder pays the cost of priority mail shipping (4.80), and actual cost of insurance (starting at 1.70). Winning bidders in Pennsylvania also pay 6% state sales tax or provide a tax exemption number. As usual, my items may be returned within five days of receipt if item is not authentic or t is substantial damage I've not shown or mentioned. Please wait for my invoice; shipping will be combined for multiple items purchased. Thanks for looking!
