It is not that often that boxes of this size, style and age become available. Believed to have been made during the late 1700Â's- very early 1800Â's and measures approximately 22Â" x 11Â" x 7 ½Â"......They certainly donÂ't much bigger than this.(The photographs do not portray the size thus a couple of photographs include another writing box to give a better representation....The other box is not included in this sale). The condition of the box is marvellous when one considers that it is a work box and in the region of 200+ years old! It is unusual to come across a writing box with contrasting edge trim, more often seen on smaller boxes of the period like tea caddies ad sewing boxes. Apart from the edge trim on the bottom edge of the back (nicely done in keeping), all the edge trim is original. Please note the edge trim to the side drawer that serves to emphasise the facility and complements all other trim. All edges are keen. Unspoilt patina. Top closes square and true. Original inset escutcheon. Original side drop handles that have not been cleaned so as to preserve the character of the box. The box opens to provide a more than generous sized writing platform. The surface has had a replacement leather fitted. It was quite often the method employed on these late 1700Â's Â- early 1800Â's writing boxes to have the two sections of the slope surface attached to the carcass by means of leather hinges. This box goes one better in that the ENTIRE width of both surfaces is hinged by a continuous leather hinge. The hinge leather has been replaced and cut to perfectly fit the original recesses and firmly fixed by the method originally employed. The Â'antiquedÂ' leather slope surface features more than the usual amount of gilt embossing and certainly enhances and emphasises the size of the box. The slope surfaces are constructed of SOLID OAK as is the base board of the office side storage section beneath the slope (a good indicator of the age of the box).....as is the use of VERY thick mahogany veneer that make up the borders surrounding the antiqued leather. The underside of the slope Â'fallÂ' has what is believed to be the original network of webbing to retain notes etc......ALL FULLY INTACT!!!!! The office section is different from most in that it has SIX sections. Two were probably for inkpots, one for a pounce pot, original dished pen tray with storage space beneath and an unusual (and ORIGINAL) sub divided Â'lidÂ' that slots within recesses cut in the dividers...perhaps to hold sealing wax? The inkwells and quill are not included but are available as an optional extra...Though arguably genuine antique inkpots would be more suitable. A box of such a size and quality does of course feature secret drawer...not the usual two or three...the size of this box enables four. All are original, constructed of solid mahogany and with extremely well made fine dovetail joints. The drawers are accessed by a different method than the usual raising of a divider and will be revealed to the winning bidder only. With the exception of the brass locking rod that secures the side drawer ALL of the brassware is original and in very good condition and a working key is supplied for the lock. A rare box, typical of the period style in a rare condition and one that cannot fail to attract the eye.
