Up for bid is a rare sling that's also been hard to pin down its exact purpose. It is a 68 1/2 to 69" long one piece leather sling with two leather keepers and a single brass claw and single brass button. It has 20 sets of double adjustment holes. It is marked Rock Island Arsenal 1903 along with the inspectors initials of TC. Brophy states on page 434 of his M1903 book that this is the Model 1903 sling for the 03 Springfield and that it was the original sling for the 03 when it became standardized. Mallory, in the Krag Rifle Story II says that the M1903 sling was used on both the Krag and 03 and was 48" long. This sling SHOULD be proper for your late Krag or early M1903. It IS dated 1903, the length and set to the leather indicate it WAS on a Krag. Sling has some light crazing and surface crackling, a bit heaver at the set portions of the sling. It is NOT cracked, split or torn. The leather is surprisingly subtle and reasonably soft. It retains a lovely light russet brown color and should display wonderfully on your Krag/03. I'll rate it a VERY GOOD PLUS to NEAR EXCELLENT . A superb find and a bit of a mystery too. Please ask any questions early and I'll do my best to answer them.
