Another plane from my collection for your consideration. It has been suggested that I should not sell my planes on eBay, that I should sell them in a catalog auction such as Brown's or Stanley's. So far, I have been satisfied with the eBay venue. If this plane does not meet reserve, I may consider a formal old-style auction house, or you may email me at and make an offer after this auction ends. I have just finally and after much angst decided to limit my collection to a very few infill planes and some specific collectables, and I am going to liberate from my collection all of the others. My wife has been most helpful in this decision. Please check my auctions frequently for the next few weeks - I have several other Norris and Spiers to come up for sale. THIS plane is a very nice NORRIS number 13 smoother. The plane is "patent metal", in other words cast steel, as none of the number 13's were dovetailed. The infill and handle are a very spectacular rosewood, which is in perfect condition, with no cracks or chips. Even the long tote is crisp without a chip or crack. The wood is stamped by prior owners "A. Walker" and "Hodgkinson". The lacquer is perfect - so perfect that I suspect that it has almost certainly been redone at some time, but a nice job that looks like it really could be the old lacquer and not the "shiny as a cockroach" redo job sometimes seen. The wood has bumps and bruises and some patina of age, so it looks a hundred years old, just with nice lacquer - sorry, hard to explain - I am trying to be specific for the collector, since this matters - if you are going to use the plane, this doesn't matter and may even be better that the lacquer is in nice condition. The metal has some light staining and some very trivial areas of very light pitting. T is one small spot on the sole of lighter color metal - I think that this might be an area of pitting with some softer metal peened in. Overall, the metal is in fantastic condition. The sole is flat and the mouth is tight. The chip breaker is marked WARD. The iron is by I. Sorby. The plane, chip breaker, and iron are all stamped "8", however the iron is also stamped "4" and it is almost certainly a replacement that someone just stamped with a number "8". The blade is 2 1/4 inches wide and has 2 inches of useable length left. The number 13 is a rather large smoothing plane - the sole measures 8 3/4" long by 2 5/8" wide. Overall, this is a very good condition plane. Will make an absolutely splendid user, but still in collectable condition if you will accept that the wood has likely been re-lacquered. Buyer to pay actual shipping/postage, which I estimate will be $30 in the states, about $40 to the UK, and $50 to Australia. Check for shipping elsew, figuring about 10 pounds weight, plus insurance. Thanks, Bob
