Up for auction is a Stunning and Beautiful, Rare, Chinese or Chrome Red Glaze, North Carolina Art Pottery, American Art Pottery, Heart Shaped Rose Bowl Vase in Absolute Mint Condition, Circa 1940's, 1950's. This is an awsome example of North Carolina Art Pottery at its best. However, giving this wonderful vase a solid attribution has been difficult. In all honesty, I want to attribute this vase to the J.B. Cole Pottery of the Seagrove area and t is quite a bit of evidence to support an attribution to them. The vase has the tell-tale stilt marks of J. B. Cole wares and it also appears to have the belt-sander evidence that came about around 1940 and after. If you study the photos closely you will also note the accented rings from turning the pot which is a signature of J.B. Cole's son, Waymon Cole. I can also add that when it comes to trying a new shape and / or glaze, this vase lends even more evidence that Waymon Cole may have turned and burned it. After J.B. Cole passed away in 1943, His son Waymon and his daughter, the famous Nell Cole Graves took over the pottery. In the early 1940's J.B. Cole was passing the torch to his two children and they decided to help speed up production by purchasing a belt sander to remove excess glaze from the bottom of pots after they were fired.
