VERY RARE LARGE & MINT HOUND HANDLED MAJOLICA PITCHER TANKARD JUG made in 1930 by Royal Winton Grimwades Staffordshire Potteries, Hanley and Stoke , from an early nineteenth century pottery design by Samuel Alcock! This nearly 10" tall pitcher by Royal Winton is nearly identical to the more commonly found Burleigh Ware "Old Feeding Time" Tankard Jug by Burgess & Leigh Staffordshire Potteries of the same era. Hunting Jugs with Hound Handles were being made in England as early as the 18 th century, and introduced into American in the 19 th century by Rockingham and Bennington. Most of the pitchers feature a hunt scene, but this one has a wonderful pastoral scene of a lady with a feeding tray surrounded by four dogs, three huge Mastiffs or Irish or Russian Wolfhounds, and one little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel at her feet, as well as one long Borzoi or Wolfhound for the hound handle. The scene is in deep relief, down to the bricks on the wall. It has the round Art Deco "Royal Winton Grimwades England" stamp is on the bottom, which is their 1930 bottom stamp. They call it "Old Davenport" and simply state that it is a "Re-production by Grimwades England". Burleigh Ware's version goes further to state that it is "A Reproduction of 'Old Feeding Time' Jug made by Samuel Alcock 100 years ago" on the bottom. T is no damage at all to the read more
