From an English estate this pair of vases are something you rarely see and as a pair.! They are just beautiful, and are mid 19th Century art glass. They were made in England , and judging by the color and design, could be from the Brierly Glass works of the Stourbridge glass Co. Considered " mantle " vases, because they are a pair, they would have had pride of place on a fireplace mantle, one at each end, most likely in front of a mirror. This enabled the owners to glory in the design from both the front and the back of the vases. Also, gas lamps were usually placed above the mantles too, which means that the vases would be beautifully lit , and light through the turquoise opalescent vase is amazing. They are opalescent glass, with applied trim and feet. The trim is called " rigaree" and. like the vases ,is hand made and hand applied. Anything with feet is very desirable, and this is a delightful pair of mid Victorian Vases, c 1870 . The " rigaree" is Cranberry glass, which is also highly collectable, so the combination of all of these factors means that this is a well sought after item to collectors. They are in perfect condition. It is the combination of the opalescent, cranberry and rigaree which makes these pieces so lovely. They measure 9 inches high and 6 inches from handle to handle 4 times around the width. The opening on the top a 5 inch opening. They are pretty heavy. One of the vases is a darker turquoise than the other around the bottom. In full light the change completely to amazing color.
