Payment | Shipping RARE RAILROAD PRIVATE CAR HANGING DOUBLE STUDENT LAMP I have bought a small collection of railroad related items from the estate of the main staff photographer for the New York Central Railroad. His name was H.W. Fechner. All of these items will be sold on Ebay. Please see my other auctions for the other items. This auction is for a rare railroad double student lamp hanging chandelier. This chandelier was probably made for a private railroad car. On a metal tag attached to the lamp the following appears: "MADE BY THE DAYTON MANUFACTURING CO. DAYTON". The lamp is all bronze and I believe it originally had a two-color patina, both copper and gilded. The lamp measures about 29 inches long and without the shades is at its widest 23 inches across. The lamp has what I believe to be its original white student lamp shades. These are antique shades, not reproductions. They measures 10 inches at the bottom and are 4 1/2 inches at the fitter. The shades fit into the shade holder and are held in place by a screw-like device. The oil tanks have a bayonet-like fitting and they too are all bronze. The lamp has clear glass oil reservoirs at the bottom of each oil lamp. I'm guessing that the attendant could see if t was oil available in the tanks in order to light the lamp. Between the two tanks, on one side, is a sprung lever of some sort. I have not tried to open this. It may be for releasing the bottom half of the fixture: that is, the oil lamps, tanks, etc, from the top frame, perhaps for servicing. Condition. I would say, outside of the finish, which has oxidized and is worn, this student lamp is in remarkable condition. This lamp has never been converted to electricity and it still maintains most of its original parts. are the parts that I know are missing: 1 round wick is t, along with its flame spreader. The other round wick and flame spreader are missing. 1 of the inserts that hold the shades to the shade holders is also missing. When I found this lamp, one shade was actually taped in to the holder. Remarkable that it never fell out. Both glass chimneys are missing.Really quite a remarkable thing. Please see photos for more on the look and condition of this student lamp. *Please note: t is another single railroad sconce from the same collection. Please see my other auctions. T is no reserve. Because of its very heavy weight and size shipping anyw in the US via UPS Ground with full insurance is $95.00. Shades will go in a separate box. International bidders please email me for a shipping quote. New York State residents will pay 8% New York State sales tax unless you have a valid NY State resale number.
