Offered for auction is an absolutely beautiful Roseville Umbrella Stand No. 719. This is a genuine Roseville, as, can be seen on the remaining portion of the original label, still affixed to the bottom of the stand, please see photos.
This is a fine example of Roseville's blended glaze, otherwise referred to as majolica. This vase can be seen in the Huxford's Encyclopedia Vol.II on page number 176 in the lower right photo. It is identified by the following: #719 Blended 22". Blended glaze is one of the oldest Roseville lines and in some cases is pre-1900 in date. The colors of the umbrella stand are simply stunning. Starting at the top t is a beautiful teal green which blends down into the yellows & greens of the band of roses & leaves, then the glaze slowly changes to a wonderful eggplant purple at the bottom. The dimensions of the umbrella stand are 22" T x 9 1/2" W at rim and 11" W at the shoulder. The stand is also mentioned in text only in Bassett's Roseville Prices in the Majolica section on page 116, second entry from the bottom labeled 719-22" umbrella stand, roses and leaves, lattice work stems, decorated and blended colors (II/15) which refers to an illustration in Mark Bassett's Understanding Roseville Pottery on page 15. This umbrella stand is in remarkable condition, considering it's age. Blended glazes were a popular and early issue from Roseville. The exact age has not been determined, although, the vase was inspected at David Rago's Auction Gallery in Lambertsville, NJ. It was verbally confirmed, as, authentic by an appraiser at the gallery during a recent appraisal session. David Rago is best known, as, a consultant and premier expert of American Art Pottery on the Antiques Roadshow, which is a popular show, currently on TV. The condition of the umbrella stand is excellent with the only flaws being an occassional glaze pop in the bottom and two on the face of the stand which are shown in the photos. The mold definition is very good and the colors are vibrant. T is the typical crazing you find in pieces this old and with this type of glaze. It does not look, as, if it was used and is, as, fresh and clean, as, the day it was made... The bottom shows typical wear from many years, but it has no chips, cracks or repairs, as, shown...
