The front displaying the inner cross of Golgotha with abbreviations on the arms in Old Church Slavonic for Ã,Â"King of GloryÃ,Â" on the top and Ã,Â"Jesus Christ, Son of GodÃ,Â" on the each side, the reverse inscribed: Let God arise and smite his foes and let hatred flee from His countenance. 18th century 1 Ã,3⁄4 in. (4.4 cm.) high; 1 in (2.5 cm.) across The Old Believers were a group of religious traditionalists who split from the Russian Orthodox Church in the 1650's over liturgical reforms introduced by Patriarch Nikon. Considered schismatics by the ecclesiastical establishment, they were often respected for their piety and their industry by other Russians. Many prominent 19th century merchants in Moscow were Old Believers.
