is a plane I had never seen before!You are bidding on one Mathiseon fenced wood molding or moulding plane as pictured. Although it looks like it, it is not a plow or plough plane. The profile is wild, with the iron cutting the full width of the profile, and not just the inside radius. Perhaps a table or furniture edge?I had no idea what to call this profile, so I turned to Whelan. And sure enough, on page 281. was this profile. He calls it a "bead joining cove", and implies that he has only seen it twice, once on a plane by Currie, who is also Scottish, and once on an American plane by L LIttle, with neither appearing to have the fence.It is marked "A MATHIESON & SON GLASGOW" on the front end, with no other markings that I can find on the wood.The iron is marked "J TURNER" as shown. Overall length of the body is 9-3/8".The entire fence and the two wedges are boxwood. Condition is mostly excellent. The body has great color and patina, but some filled worm holes. The fence appears original, but has been a bit overcleaned to my tastes. A spectacular plane! The queue is overflowing with tools right now, as they seem to be finding me faster than I can list them. I typically list in batches of similar tools, and sitting right now in the queue are LOTS of metal planes and parts for them, even more American and British molders, chisels and gouges, bevels and squares, books about tools, and a variety of other tools. And if you, like me, are tired of the disappointments as a shopper -- misleading descriptions and poor photographs, "fine" tools that turned out to be repainted when you got them, non original parts that weren't mentioned, and poor packaging, -- then I encourage you to follow my auctions. I come from the handshake school of doing business, and hopefully you are like me and understand what that means. ETHICS IN DESCRIPTIONS: I also buy for my collecting on eBay, and I have been burned too many times by misleading (duh did I forget to mention .......) descriptions, and pictures only of the left side when the right side was trashed. Life is much simpler for me if I disclose what I know or see about an item before you bid, and especially before you receive it in the mail. If I have added or repalced a part, I will tell you. If I think the wedge on a molding plane is not original, I will tell you. If I think a japanned plane has been repainted, I will tell you. What goes around, comes around. RETURN POLICY: I believe that if you give honest descriptions, and include enough pictures, you shouldn't need a return policy. However, that doesn't mean that I won't make an occasional mistake. Please bid with the assurance that if I have made an error in my listing, I WILL take care of you. WASHINGTON STATE BIDDERS: I hate to do this, but if I ship to a Washington address, I either have to charge sales tax at the rate of 9.0%, or receive a valid resale form.PRIORITY MAIL FLAT RATE BOXES FOR HEAVY ITEMS: The Post Office has two sizes of the regular Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes (11-7/8 x 3-3/8 x 13-5/8 inches and 11 x 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches), plus a larger and more expensive Flat Rate Box, for which the postage stays the same regardless of weight. I try to use these if at all possible.WINNING MULTIPLE AUCTIONS: I will always combine multiple purchases to save on shipping, and use the Flat Rate boxes whenever they make sense.OVERSEAS BIDDERS:The US Post Office just raised rates, especially international rates. Shipping will be at my cost for postage plus $2 for packaging materials. The postage cost for Priority Mail to either Australia or the UK ranges from about $22 for 1 pound to $37.00 for a Flat Rate box, and gets much more expensive if it is heavy and won't fit in the Flat Rate box.
