vintage signed Steuben PORPOISE Lloyd Atkins design 1964 New Bedford, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Baja California...do you long for seafaring days? Consider this signed Steuben Porpoise a reminder of the beauty of ocean life and the perfect birthday gift or a special gift for the hostess or collector!! This Porpoise/Dolphin is a mid 1960's design by Lloyd Atkins, famous for Steuben's most treasured animal and sea life designs (including nearly all of the hand coolers). This vintage Porpoise is in beautiful condition with no chips, no cracks, no scuffs and no scratches on the base or body that I can see. T is no damage to the fins and the eyes are detailed. This is a retired design and is rarely found in such superb condition. The Porpoise is a larger sculpture and measures 6 1/2" long with the heft and clarity Steuben is noted for. It is signed " steuben " under the fin. It will come wrapped in a vintage fine flannel Steuben bag similar to the one in the photo. Steuben is noted for their rigorous attention to detail and for the high quality of their glass. They state in their literature that they do not market "seconds". In fact, they note that such pieces are destroyed in house. Steuben Glass was founded by Frederick Carder in 1903 and is located in the Fingerlakes Region of New York State. By following strict standards for design and manufacture they have achieved recognition as the worlds premier glassworks. Steuben Glass is frequently the gift of state by US Presidents to foreign dignitaries. Steuben is a luxury brand and they have no "sales". Because of these factors, a well maintained handmade Steuben collectible is likely to increase in value over time. A fair starting bid for a Steuben gem in mint condition with no hidden reserve, (when it was available it was priced similarly to the Donald Pollard Owl which currently retails for $1100 before taxes--a 2" larger dolphin on a wave base is now $3300 at ). I ship promptly and pack with care double boxing fragiles. My goal is that you are satisfied with this auction, the item and the service you receive. I encourage you to ask questions. The art glass that I offer is handmade and as such may vary slightly from item to item. I inspect the pieces I offer very carefully and make every effort to note attributes and exceptions. The nature of an auction is a specific date and time. Because the items I offer are of limited manufacture and supply and because my inventory may be limited to this example only, as a rule, I do not accept returns . However, if you consider my description is negligent or deliberately misleading (which I make every effort to insure it is not) then you may contact me. I appreciate your interest in this auction and I hope you will take time to look at the other items I have listed on Ebay this week. This Porpoise is Steuben #8125 and appears on page 357 of the 2003 MJ Madigan Steuben reference book.
