is a unique gift idea for the collector of Fredrick Carder era Steuben art glass objects on your holiday shopping list: offered for auction is this genuine, jade-and-alabaster glass pitcher with silver-overlayed decor, made by Steuben Glassworks, around 1930. The body of the pitcher is made with swirl-patterned jade glass, while the applied handle is alabaster glass. While Steuben jade-and-alabaster glass articles are commonplace, what makes this pitcher rare and unique is the silver-overlay decor on its body and rim - Fredrick Carder did not have silver-overlay decor put on a whole lot of the articles he made. The pitcher is 9 1/2 inches tall, the top opening is 4 1/4 inches wide, while the width at the widest point (including the handle) of the pitcher is 6 1/2 inches. This is in Shape Number 6232 and It is signed 'STEUBEN' with acid-etched capital letters (see picture) - according to Paul V Gardner, Steuben Glass Works used such signatures between 1929 and 1932 (Reference: page 134 of Paul V Gardner's book, 'The Glass of Fredrick Carder', Crown Publication, 1971). Also, I quote John A Shuman III: "Signed jades will have a fleur-de-lis, block 'STEUBEN', or script 'Steuben' mark" (page 21 of his book: 'American Art Glass - Identification & Values, 2nd Edition, Collector Books, 2006). A similar jade-and-alabaster pitcher (although without the silver overlay) is shown on page 165 of Shuman's book with a valuation between $700 and $900 - in my opinion, the raririty of this silver-overlayed pitcher should make it much more valuable. The pitcher has a polished and ground pontil (see pictures). Except for some scratches at the bottom, the glass is in excellent condition - no chips, cracks, repairs, etc. As is typical of hand-made glass objects, t are a few fabrication imperfections. As is expected of an article that is over 70 years old, t is some minor tarnishing of the silver, which could be buffed out with a silver polish. T are minor discontinuations to the silver lines near the handle-base (see last pictures). This is a NO RESERVE auction. Thanks for looking and should you decide to place a bid: GOOD LUCK. NB: Please feel free to ask questions only if you are seriously interested in bidding on the item - Thanks for your consideration.
