Rare silver card box complete with original cards in original order!
The box: The overall size of the box and its lid is 3" tall, 2-1/8" wide and 1-1/2" deep. The box had a hinged lid with a friction clasp. The outside of the box is silver with a cross hatch pattern all over. The inside of the box is yellow and not tarnished so I assume it is gold. You can see maker's marks on both the lid and box. The box is divided so that each deck is stored separately. Engraved on the inside of the lid are the words Bob from Sabina . T are some partial fingerprints on the bottom of the box, perhaps Bob's or Sabina's. I have resisted polishing this card box, thinking the successful bidder may wish it to remain as is. It is only moderately tarnished. On the bottom of the box are the words Asprey London. Asprey London is a store on Bond Street that sells luxury items to this day. They were founded in 1781. The box and its cards were produced for Asprey. The cards: The cards were manufactured by Goodall and Son Limited, London. Goodall manufactured 75% of the playing cards made in Britain. The company was established in 1820 and ceased operations in 1922. They added the word Limited to their name in 1898 and changed the Ace of Spades to include the word Limited. As a result, it is safe to conclude that the cards were made sometime between 1898 and 1922. The cards are smaller than standard playing cards: 1-5/8" wide by 2-11/16" tall. They are in A,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,J,Q,K order and I suspect they have never been shuffled. T are no bends and they are in perfect condition. One deck is red and the other deck is blue. As I think about this wonderful card set, I muse on its small size. I wonder why smaller cards were made--were they small so that soldiers could bring them in their foot locker? Did Asprey introduce small cards shortly before WW1? Officers would have shopped at Asprey's, perhaps this was a gift to an officer. Travellers might want a small cards, trunk space is always at a premium. People travelled by ship, did these cards make the maiden voyage of the Lusitania? No one will ever know, unless that is, someone can identify Bob or Sabina.
