These are Pompeian Bronze polychrome paint large art deco owl bookends, circa 1925, and guaranteed to be old, genuine and original. Pompeian, along with it's contemporaries Marion, Galvano and Armor Bronze, made bookends a certain way that was so expensive and time consuming that they have yet to be duplicated or faked. As such, they are highly desired by antique and vintage bookend collectors. These bronze companies made plaster molds and dipped them into a bronzing solution until bronze clad by means of long, metal wicks in the bases. When bronzed, they cut off the wicks, leaving tell tale shallow depressions with the remnants of the wicks in the bases, like these. These are big, measuring 8 and a half inches tall and weighing ove r8 pounds the pair. They have no damage and only the paint loss shown in the pictures. The vast majority of the paint remains and it is still vivid and colorful. These are snow owls, creamy white with huge, halloween type orange and black spooky owl eyes, and a black beak. They stand on two tumbled red and blue books on a gilded bronze base and the feather detail on these is outstanding. Look at the pictures closely to see how beautiful they are from so many angles since they are three dimensional or fully figural . You can find these pictured in the antique and vintage bookend reference guide by Kuritzky, read more
