Happy New Year!! We celebrate the beginning of 2007 with a bounty of exceptional Religious Artifacts that we have collected for you on our travels over the Holidays. This week we are offering two stunning Embroidered Processional Canopies. Please check our other Auctions for the 2nd companion piece.
IN THIS AUCTION we are offering for your consideration a magnificent French highly embroidered and ornate Gold Processional Canopy Curtain. The antique dealer dates this piece from 1860 - 1880. This piece is simply spectacular. Rich in liturgical history, the embroidered and appliquéd Banners read "O Salutaris Hostia" which literally translates to "O Salutary Host". This is one of the three Eucharistic hymns written by Saint Thomas Aquinas for the Feast of Corpus Christi which was celebrated starting in 1264! Generally, when the Canopy is Gold in color it is used as a hanging carried over the Blessed Sacrament. A central motif of the Chalice with Host is embroidered in the most lavish thick gilt thread embroidery resting on a sky blue field. Sequined rays of light emanate from the Chalice which is framed with a stunning red velvet and gilded gold thread embroideries accented with golden studs. Embellishing the canopy are Clusters of grapes hanging from embroidered vines, with leaves and shafts of wheat. The entire canopy is edged in a gorgeous wide trim and the bottom has the most fabulous 2 ½ inch (6.5 cm) antique gold metallic bullion fringe. This piece has the most exceptional thick raised embroidery with superb workmanship. The entire piece measures 50 inches long (125 cm) by 18 inches wide (46 cm) at the center point - not including the fringe. T are wire loops on the top back for hanging and ribbons on the side for tying to the canopy poles. The entire piece is lined in a solid red fabric. As you can see from the photos aside from minimal wear as one would expect of a piece of this age, the canopy is in excellent condition. T is a slight discoloration on the top left side of the canopy (to the right of the leaf) and the backing lining is stained in several places. Overall this piece is simply dazzling and one of the most amazing and lavish pieces we have ever been able to present to you on Ebay.
