UNIQUE RARE ONE OF A KIND BEDROCK FOR COLLECTORS ONLY FIVE DAY VIEWING PERIOD The Simple Life of Noah Dearborn - movie with Sidney Poitier who plays an old fashioned woodworker, using hand tools and foot powered tools sometimes plays out in real life. This plane you are now considering buying comes from a farm style house with separate barn. The person who bought the property back in 1980 was putting in some posts to partition off part of the barn for his wood working room. He hit pay dirt when he found this plane wrapped in heavy canvas. Inside the (waterproof) canvas he found old butcher's paper and inside was this plane totally smeared in some type of animal grease--he said it had a slight odor to it but not an offensive one. When he cleaned it up he found this beauty. Why it was buried nobody knows--the man who probably did it has long since parted this world. Years later I did some work for the lucky finder and part of my payment was this plane. It is an old Stanley Bed Rock No 605 stamped with "U.S. PAT APR-19-10 (for 1910, April 19). At the other end w the small rosewood knob fastens is the word BEDROCK. On one side of the plane's body the number 9 and on the other side the number 14 (hard to tell due to small scratch going thru the 1). Japanning seems to be 95% or better. T is very little rust on this plane. That animal lard did its job. The smooth bottom of the plane is a little scuffed along most of one edge but nothing serious--it's hard to show it in pictures. The adjusting handle on the frog has the word STANLEY . Nothing can be observed on the chip breaker. The blade looks almost new (I only used it twice--the lucky day I was presented with it and just a few days ago when I tried it out again to make shavings to take a picture to show you that it can still do what it was so lovingly created to do). STANLEY is inside the sweetheart logo with MADE IN USA. underneath at the opposite end of the sharp blade. Unlike many lever caps that are chipped or etched with corrosion, this one appears as new as the day it was made. It does have the patina on the bottom showing its age but the top with the famous word BEDROCK looks good to these old eyes. I notice many of the Bedrock planes being sold on eBay have a Stanley lever cap and not Bedrock. I'm not sure if the Stanley ones are replacements or not. The brass adjusting knob that screws into the post on the frog looks to be in fine fettle and only took a little of Mother's famous polish to bring back its glory sheen. Now, many of the people selling these planes don't take the time to completely disassemble the plane but I wanted you to see all the parts because many of the planes are missing the bolt that when turned allowed the frog to move a little back and forth on the plane. I have to assume that the bolts were taken out by their owners because in order to turn that bolt to have the back and forth movement of the frog, you would have to take off the back tote to have access to the bolt and most wood workers were not willing to jeopardize that tote so they just took off the bolt and it is never seen again. Finally the tote and the front knob appear to be spotless and their shine is still t I think they are the rosewood but not 100%. The long male studs are fine with the brass caps for each stud still flawless. I can find no chips, cracks, bad spots of any kind or nature but can only warrant what my old eyes (and hand held magnifying glass) can see. Altogether t are 22 separate pieces (without punching out pins and such to further disassemble the frog or lever cap) so you can see for your own eyes that this is a complete Stanley Bedrock No 605 wood plane. So t you have the long and short of the history and physical declarations of this neat old Bedrock No 605 wood plane with smooth (not corrugated) bottom. If t is a nicer one for sale, BUY IT as the man who once saved Chrysler said (Lee Iacocca) about the same time this plane was being dug up from it impromptu burial grounds. After using the plane to be a...
