Well folks, This is guaranteed 100% to be the real deal....This is a sterling silver goblet given to t leader Dan Bryant of the Christys Mintrels in England....It measures 6 and 3/4 inches tall by 3 and 1/2 wide...On the front it READS PRESENTED TO MR. BRYANT BY HIS OLD SENCERE FRIENDS C. W. MOORE,,,,J.P. CROCKER,,,J.H. RITTER,,,,H.H.HAMILTON,,,,AND F. BURGESS OF THE ORIGINAL CHRISTYS MINTRELS LIVERPOOL JUNE 28 1865........This has to be one of the finest peices of Americania I have owned. Other than the Charles Thomson chair{signer of the original Declaration of Independents we sold,, ...If you take the time to read further Dan Bryant was friends with John Wilke Booth and when they found John Wilke Booth t was a pin on his shirt that read Dan Bryant to J. W. Booth..It was said that he and the booth family were friends...Makes you wonder what kinda of person Dan Bryant was as a black face actor being friends with John Wilkes Booth...Who we all know assinated then President Lincoln...This is a great peice of History and belongs in a Museum hopefully it will find its way t.T is , what I consider a small reserve on this great peice,as it is one of kind and would make a great addition to any collection...As with all my items this is guaranteed 100% to your satisfaction for any reason....Thanks for viewing and good luck bidding...Antiques of Cape May Member BBB Condition is great with on s few small dings in the bottom of the foot...Weight just about a pound and the sterling silver is just outstanding....Makers mark in pic..This peice wss given to Dan Bryant while on tour in England in 1865...Thanks Bob
Dan Bryant (Daniel Webster O'Brien) made his debut as a dancer in 1845. His minstrel character first appeared in New York City in 1845, dancing to patter songs like "Shoo Fly." Bryant was also famous for an Irish character named Handy Andy. Transcripts of the trial of the conspirators relate the following as to how the body taken from the Garrett farm was identified. Colonel Everton J. Conger was present at the Garrett farm for the entire ordeal. he testified at the trial the he had met John Wilkes Booth in Washington on several occasions prior to the incident at the Garrett farm. he further stated that both men were the same. Also on the witness stand were L. B. Baker, Lt. Doherty, and several others. Each told of how they knew the body was that of Booth. At the Surratt trial in 1867, a new piece of information became known. Lt. Luther Byron Baker testified that "t was a pin which Colonel Conger took off his undershirt after we tore open the collar." Baker then identified the pin which had been taken from Booth's body. Conger then took the stand and testified that after Booth was shot and before he died, he took a stone set in jet from Booths' person on which was engraved "Dan Bryant to J. W. Booth." (Bryant was an actor and friend of the Booth family. I have found two independent sources from prior to the assassination that confirm that Bryant did in fact give Booth such a pin and that he kept it pinned to his undershirt.)Black-face performers had been known as 'Ethiopian delineators'. The word 'minstrel' had applied to any professional entertainer since the twelfth century in Europe, but the Virginia Minstrels, who toured for only a few months before breaking up, tied the word for ever to black-face. Immediately successful, they played at record-breaking engagements in New York and Boston, and sailed for England in April. The English already loved black-face entertainment; Sweeney was touring Britain playing the banjo, and the Virginia Minstrels were a hit, but box office receipts mysteriously evaporated, so they could not support themselves and broke up. The equally famous Christy Minstrels were formed in 1844 by Edwin P. Christy, who wrote 'Goodnight Ladies' and other songs. Born in Philadelphia, he studied black rhythms in Congo Square in New Orleans, w he was a factory foreman. First he toured as one of ...
