A very RARE early American slip decorated redware storage jar âe¦. PLEASE read ALL of MY FEEDBACK .....This is not a fulltime job, so please have patients. For sale today is a small 10âe inch tall 1 gallon ovoid stoneware crock cobalt blue decorated on both side with one side with an elaborated group of flowers perfectly centered in the jar and sitting in a stylized flower pot.. The other side is decorated with a cobalt one and brush strokes to each side of the one and a squiggly line below. This is an early piece and not often seen with so much blue. The handles also have blue accents. Notice t are incised bands for the handle placement. This jar is attributed to Abial Price a member of the well known New Jersey family potters. He was born in 1802 in a town called (Roundabouts) now Sayreville in Middlesex County , New Jersey located near Perth Amboy and New Brunswick . (a photo is added below of a jug potted and marked by Abial Price from South Amboy.) He was known to have potted in Roundabouts Pottery âe~til 1827, then moving to Massachusetts and believed to have potted near or in Taunton, MA possibly with Seaverâe(tm)s Pottery or Ingellâe(tm)s Pottery. Then between 1838-1840 he moved back to South Amboy, NJ with his family and potted at Congress Pottery. Not long after in 1845 he started his own pottery in Middletown Point and soon after died in 1852. The condition of this diminutive jar is as follows: t is a minor hairline on the rim about 1âe inch long just over the left handle if you were looking at the side with the flowers. On the other side t is a chip at mid-body of jar. The hairline is barely noticeable and t are, no other cracks, chips or repairs (see photo). Reference pictures have been added of both sides of the Abial Price jug that is marked on the bottom in script "Abial Price". On the backside of the same jug it is dated South Amboy Sept 14th, 1840.
