I am offering for your bid and consideration a rare bound book with three almanacs. The almanacs are being relisted due to the fact that my description, even though I thought I was making an accurate description, was not complete. This was brought to my attention by Dorothy Sloan of Dorothy Sloan Rare Books. She has given me permission to use her description of the almanacs which follows. After the description, you will be able to read what was missing after she looked at it. I had nothing to compare this set of almancs to and know is something was missing. Thanks to Dorothy for her professional guidance! From Dorothy: With Labadie's Controversial Account of the Battle of San Jacinto [ TEXAS ALMANACS]. RICHARDSON, [Willard & David]. Three Texas almanacs bound in one volume. Galveston , 1856, 1857, 1858. 8vo (21.3 x 14.7 cm), contemporary three-quarter black leather over marbled boards, spine lettered and rolled in gilt, edges sprinkled. Binding moderately shelf worn, boards rubbed, hinges starting, endpapers moderately darkened, monthly tables of first title slightly shaved at top, leaves of second almanac moderately foxed and browned, many leaves of third almanac with light uniform browning. The three vols. lack ads and some other materials (see below). Jenkins ( Basic Texas Books 172) comments: "The Richardson almanacs comprise one of the finest research sources for virtually every aspect of nineteenth-century Texas history. Particularly in the pre-war issues, t are literally dozens of memoirs, biographies, and historical essays of great value. Most of these articles were written from interviews with participants, or by the participants themselves. Much of our surviving eyewitness information on the Texas Revolution and Republic of Texas appears in the Richardson almanacs, as well as a vast amount of economic and statistical data. Every volume, excepting only the war issues, is a separate mine for the researcher." Discussing Texas almanacs as a rich source for the history of Texas counties, H. Bailey Carroll describes them collectively as "The Encyclopedia of Texas " ( Southwestern Historical Quarterly 45:4). The volumes in this lot are: RICHARDSON, [Willard & David].
