USLHS LIGHTHOUSE SERVICE NUMBER 2 HAND LANTERN DIETZ BLIZZARD NO 2 Hand lanterns were issued to each lighthouse in a set, a number one and a number two hand lantern etc. This auction is for a number two hand lantern. Lanterns were marked so as to not get them confused with the other style when they were needed. A keeper could say "get the number one lantern" and the keepers assistant would know which one to get. This lantern could be hung in the lantern room above the lens as the keeper was lighting the lens lamp for that evening so that it would be readily accessible if the light were to go out. It could also be hung in view of the water in the lantern room. This was a back up light while re-lighting or repairs were made to the main oil lamp. Since no electricity was available at many US lighthouses in the early 1900's, kerosene lanterns were the only sources of light at night. As with all objects in the lighthouse service, the lantern is marked with the US Lighthouse Service Plate seen in the photographs. The Lighthouse Digest had an article on these lanterns stating "The kerosene langerns were smaller units with a carrying handle or bail on the top. The globes were generally clear as they were used for lighting rather than navigation aid. I have seen only four or five over the years and all were manufactured by the R.E. Dietz Company generally their 'No. 2 Blizxard" style. " http://www.lighthousedepot.coom/digest/Storypage.cfm?storykey=1791 You can read more about Dietz lanterns at . The lantern is 14 inches high. The condition is as pictured. The lamp is unrestored. See / for information on Dietz lantern restoration.
