RARE Victorian Slant Top Desk/Etagere/Candle Shelves Oak Side by Side, Secretary, Whatnot, Mirror & CarvingsThis is a Rare and Unique Piece of True Victorian Furniture . It is so rare, that I have not been able to find a name for the piece. It is similar to the side by sides, etageres, whatnot shelves, slant top desks, and as you can see in the pictures, this item is a highly unique piece of furniture. We checked everyw on the Internet, and even in the Encyclopedia of Furniture, but found nothing even similar to this cabinet. For the sake of this auction, we will refer to this as a Victorian slant top cabinet . This cabinet is completely original from the largest piece of wood to the smallest screw. I purchased this at an estate sale in Greenwich, Connecticut from a gentleman who inherited it from his family. He told me that his grandfather had used this piece in his "study" for years, and the man remembered this piece from his childhood. The drawer pulls, the upper knob on the decorative door, the escutcheons on the slant top and the drawer are all made of decorative solid brass, and all have a beautiful patina. The knob is especially detailed with pierced brass and an outer decoration with a floral center. Both locks work, and I have the key. The key is very shiny and may not be the original, but since the gentleman said he never had the need to lock the cabinet and the key was taped to the door, it may never have seen the light of day. The carving on this piece are very deep and very fanciful and it is made of 3/4" solid oak. It was much less expensive to attach an applique rather than carve the design into the oak. Much of the wood is quarter sawn, which is sometimes referred to as tiger oak. Quarter sawn oak was mainly used on higher end pieces of the period. The quarter sawn wood, the deep carving and the detailed hardware on this piece are all of the signs of a high end piece of the day. Even the inside bottom of the drawer is flame grained, and may be birch, beech or possibly maple. The sides of the drawer are oak. Less desireable pieces usually had lesser quality wood and only the front of the drawer would be oak. The interior cubbies are made of the same flame grained wood as the drawer bottom, although it is not highly noticeable on the long ends than the small cubbies. We believe our photographs will show all of the details of the cabinet. T are some ink stains on the inside bottom of the oak desk, and t is a small circle stain, probably from an ink bottle. If you are knowledgeable about any of the desks of this era and earlier, it is most common to have ink stains on these pieces. Each door and drawer opens and closes with ease. The mirror is deeply beveled. It is beveled one inch around and is in excellent condition. For a mirror this old, it contains none of the pitting or black spotting and is 99.5% intact. A great feature is that this cabinet is in two pieces. The cabinet lifts apart above the top of the oak hinged slant top desk. T are two blocks to hold the top together with the bottom. One block is attached to the upper piece and the other block is attached to the lower to lock them together and keep them aligned. This also makes it easier to move and may make it easier to ship through UPS rather than a furniture mover because we believe it falls within their size requirements. The piece is 71" tall and 32" wide at its widest point. It is 16" deep at the base of the slant top desk base. The slant top is suspended by two chains and adds 14" to the depth of the desk when open. The mirror measures 17" wide and 13" high. Compared to other pieces of furniture of the Victorian Period, this contains all of the decorative and fanciful designs that the period was famous for, and it is not one of the simple, mass produced slant top desks, etageres, side by sides, or any other mass produced piece of furniture. It has a much larger slant top and is much more decorative than any of the other cheaper, generic pieces with lower grade woods and...
