This is a very unique find! An early photograph by Lazlo Willinger destined to become one of Hollywoods most famous glamour photographers. The matte that the photograph is mounted on is signed by Willinger himself, noting that it was taken in Berlin. The actual photograph is signed by the subject - the signature is difficult to read but the last name might be Mihailova and is dated June 30, 1929 - also noting Berlin - This could be an actress, singer, ballerina etc. definately someone who was fashionable and a celebrity at the time.
OF NOTE: if this photograph was taken in 1929 then that would make Willinger 20 years old! near the beginning of his career - but this photograph certainly exhibits the masterful lighting and composition that became his trademark. Laszlo Willinger (April 6, 1909 in Budapest, Hungary - August 8, 1989) was photographer most noted for his portrait photography of movie stars and celebrities during the 1930s and 1940s. Taught photography by his mother, also a photographer, Willinger established photographic studios in Paris and Berlin in 1929 and 1931 respectively, and at the same time submitted his photographs to various newspapers as a freelance contributor. He left Berlin in 1933 when Adolf Hitler became Chancellor, settling and working in Vienna w he began to photograph such celebrities as Marlene Dietrich. By the mid 1930s he was travelling through Africa and Asia before being invited by the photographer Eugene R. Richee to move to the United States. After establishing a studio in Hollywood, Willinger became a frequent contributor to magazines and periodicals, providing magazine cover portraits of some of the most popular stars. Willinger was one of the first Hollywood photographers to experiment in the use of color, however he also created numerous black-and-white images. In later years, shortly before his death, Willinger had been accused of stalking some celebreties of the time. Including Charlie Chaplin. An investigation into these matter led to the uncovering of thousands of personal pictures of the male comedy star. He commited suicide shortly after the accusations. Willinger's portraits have become collectible and are appreciated as fine art; his 1940 series of portraits of the actors Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh are housed in London's National Portrait Gallery MORE Laszlo Willinger (b. 1909) started out as a writer and illustrating his stories. Then he discovered he could get more for his photographs than for his writing, and that was it! A professional photographer since age 16, Laszlo Willinger has photographed many of the most important personages of this century. Born in Budapest, Hungary, his first studio was in Berlin w he specialized in making portraits of theatrical and political figures. At 19 he went to Paris, w he managed the portrait studio of the Keystone Agency, also known as the Talbot Studios. At 23 he opened his own studio in Vienna, w he again photographed the most important names of that period. Then, when the political situation in Europe became too threatening, Laszlo left for Hollywood in 1937. Recalling the 30's and 40's, Willinger said he didn't think t was any time in history when more people so talented on every level had ever been together as in the Hollywood of those decades. For those of us who didn't live them, those years seem so glamorous and exciting, especially when reflected through the brilliance of this legendary Hollywood photographer. Among the stars Willinger most enjoyed photographing were said to have been Joan Crawford, Vivian Leigh, and Clark Gable. Willinger acted as the art director when photographing the stars. The only thing expected of him was to make images that the press would choose to print over everyone else's. T could be up to 5000 pictures available on any major star. To get printed, your photograph had to be the best. One thing he always kept in mind, regardless of the subject, is that the photograph has a purpose - and that's to sell. ...
