This auction is for a rare antique map of the "Michigan Territory, No. 36" drawn by J. Finlayson. I am guessing that this map dates back into the early 1800's based on it's content, and the fact that Michigan did not enter the union until 1837. The map has been professionally framed and matted, and measures 22 ½ inches in height, and 26 ½ inches wide. Entitled "Geographical, Statistical, and Historical Map of Michigan Territory", this map of roughly modern day Michigan has an angled line through the middle of the state entitled "Indian Line." The text on both sides of the map are divided into the following categories: 'Situation, Boundaries, and Extent', 'Face of the Country, Soil, &c', 'Lakes, Bays, and Rivers', 'Animals, &c', 'Climate', 'Civil Divisions and Populations' [which interestingly lists the population at only 8896], 'Town and Forts', 'Commerce', 'Government Historical Sketch', and finally 'Places Remarkable for Battles and Sieges, indicated by a Flag' [the last entry under this heading is Frenchtown (1813): "the Americans compelled to surrender by the British and Indians, and many are afterwards cruelly destroyed."In the left lower hand corner of the map appear the words "Drawn by J. Finlayson", and in the lower right corner are the words "Engrav'd by Young & Delleker". The buyer will pay $35.00 for professional packaging read more
