Tiny Statues of Mary inside Holy Water Beads
Plus Original Tag - Made in Italy
This rare rosary from the 1950s commemorates the Marian apparition at Lourdes. It's complete and in excellent vintage condition. It even has the original manufacturer's metal tag, which reads: "Brevetto N. 585850 Italy" and "Legatura Alpacca". Alpacca is the registered tradename of an alloy consisting of copper, nickel and zinc, also called nickel silver, that never rusts. This rosary measures 23.75"/60.5 cm hanging length.
The 10 mm oval ave beads are clear plastic, each encasing a tiny blue statue of Mary. The heart-shaped pater beads contain tiny blue statues of the Sacred Heart. The beads are quite clear and some still contain holy water from the springs of Lourdes, while others contain crystals of spring water as a result of evaporation.
The 2"/53 mm INRI crucifix features a high-relief plastic casing in an alpacca base. It encloses 3-D blue roses on a white background, with "JHS" framed with a crown of thorns behind Jesus' head. The corpus is nicely detailed. The back is marked "Lourdes" and "Italy."
The central medal depicts St. Bernadette's vision of Mary at Lourdes. It too is deeply molded blue plastic encased in nickel silver; the reverse reads in French: "Je Suis L'Immaculee Conception / Lourdes" (I Am the Immaculate Conception / Lourdes).
This outstanding rosary was made in Italy for the French market. It is very sturdily made, and was well taken care of. This year is the 150th anniversary of the Lourdes Apparition, and this rosary would be a perfect way to celebrate! The Pope has offered an indulgence to pilgrims who visit Lourdes by December 8.
