Presented is a RARE vintage WEDGWOOD JASPER WARE jug. Jasperware or Jasperware dip is a decorative process which was developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the late 1700's. While several other companies, e.g. Adams Co., copied the process, Wedgwood in still the best known and best quality. This jug was produced by the Wedgwood Company in 1870 as determined by the 3 letter code on the base, "CTY", the last letter indicating the year. The Bas-Relief classical figures on this piece are beautiful and very ornately carved and thick. The bottom of the jug is also stamped Wedgwood and DORIC. This jug is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or repairs. The relief is also in excellent condition. A similar but much smaller jug is valued at $500.00 in the Wedgwood Jasper ware book by Herman. The jug is 8 1/4" high and 6" in diameter at the most bulbous point.
