Rare WINSTON NC Confederate 1863 Civil War Newspaper ** is a complete, genuine historic newspaper with the following title, date and description: WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, North Carolina, October 15, 1863 * Rare Confederate newspaper * Wealth of Civil War news : General Bragg's Army This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era. The ftpg. has a fascinating letter typeset as if written by an uneducated soldier, many of the words spelled phonetically (see photos). Other items on the ftpg. are headed: "The Confederate Navy" "The Fort Sumter Flag" "The Victory at Sabine Pass" "The Advance" and other items. War-related news carries over to take most of pages 2 and 3 including items headed: "The News" "More Meanness" "The Currency" "Bragg's Army" "From Texas" "A Gallant Naval Exploit" "Northern Items" "500 Deserters Caught" "Gen. Lee's Army" and an article beginning: "A Gentleman from Lincoln's dominions, an exile because of his opposition to the dynasty now in power in the Norther States..." . Other items concerning the war as well. The bkpg. has: "Confederate War Tax" "An Army Incident" and many ads, including an: "Exchange Notice No. 6" noting the various prisoners exchanged (see photos), and another ad headed: "Notice. Valuable Land, Negroes, and Other Property At Public Auction" with various details. Complete in 4 pgs., damp staining to the upper right, slightly irregular at the blank spine margin, otherwise in nice condition.
