This is the most wonderful piece of American History. It is a fabric sign meant to be posted on farming property to protect, what I believe, is the turtle dove. The sign is 8" x 15 and is in mint condition. The sign states, "Shooting on this Property is Prohibited, WAR, Protect the Birds as a War Measure!" It then reads, "The food destroyed in America by insects and small rodents would feed the people of Belgium! Birds are the great natural enemies of these pests. The laws of this State and of the Nation protect insect-eating birds, but many are being shot wantonly and for food. Report violations to the nearest game warden or to the address given below." T is then the same message but in Italian. Below this reads, "National Association of Audubon Societies, 1974 Broadway, New York City". I found an article in the New York Times, Sept. 24, 1911 that headline read, "Turtle Dove, Best Cottonfield Worker, Must Be Saved, National Association of Audubon Societies Start Interesting Campaign for Their Prevention". The Audubon Societies told of all the turtle doves attributes and said that on the economic principle that the life of a good worker who asks for no wages is worth the effort to preserve.
