Up for auction is a super-rare set of the legendary H.B. "Rocket" aviation goggles as were worn by U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviators before and during World War II. Examples of this goggle can be seen on pages 177 and 179 of Mick Prodger's excellent reference for collectors "Vintage Flying Helmets.". The Rocket was renowned not only for its rakish good looks, but for the sturdiness of its heavily chrome-plated frames and the excellent field of vision afforded by its elliptical, hardened glass lenses. The Rocket represented the top of the line in style for well-known aviation products manufacturer Harry Buegeleisen, which also made the famous Resistal line of goggles. Rockets are rare in any case, but they are super-rare when you can find them in good condition like this set is after 70 years of existence. The frames are sound, with with virtually no dings or scratches -- they have a truly luxurious gleam to them, as befitting the Rockets' station as one of the most expensive goggles of its day. The original large rubber face pad is undamaged and remains quite pliable, showing only some surface scuffing. One or two stitches have broken free on the top (see photo), but the pad remains secure to the frame. The hardened sky blue lenses show a few very minor surface scratches but are overall pristine and really catch the eye. The (what I believe to be) original head strap is no longer useable, but is the easiest thing to replace.
Also included is the original storage box, which is well marked with a good deal of manufacturer nomenclature. This is one dynamite set of vintage flying goggles that would definitely enhance any vintage aviation collection. Postage $9.50 to U.S. locations (insurance optional but recommended); $23.00 overseas. Please be sure to check out my other auctions for many more vintage aviation items.
