Available for auction or immediate purchase, is this charming Antique PA German Child's Sampler dated 1790. The Samplemaker was a member of the Pennsylvania German Protestant sect called the Schwenkfelders. Mary Yeakle of Montgomery, PA was the daughter of Abraham Yeakle and Sarah Wagner Yeakle. Young Mary was 6 years old when she completed this sweet Textile. This pleasing textile contains the German Alphabet in large letters completed in various colors of thread. Several needlework motifs have been tenderly stitched consisting of floating florals possibly tulips or carnations, star flowers, birds, trees, and geometric shapes in thread colors of blue, pink, brown, cream, green, and rose on a homespun linen. Maryâe(tm)s stitched signature appears in the center, and the date 1790, has been stitched at the bottom center between branches of a tree, as depicted in the photograph. This piece appears to be a part of either a larger Sampler or a Show Towel, as t is various stitches on the bottom indicating additional motif fragments; the previous owner has kindly salvaged, framed, and preserved this sweet textile. Worked in silk on homespun linen, this Sampler is in good condition for its age; it has been preserved in a dark wood frame, mounted onto a sage-green matting, and appears to be affixed with a glue-like substance. I state these details as it appears as if a small area in the top center of textile has absorbed some of the glue residue. Maryâe(tm)s Yeakleâe(tm)s Sampler was purchased from a private collection containing various rare PA German and Schwenkfelder treasures to include, Toleware, Frankfur Drawings, Show Towels, and Samplers. Mary Yeakle was born on September 4, 1784, the daughter of Abraham Yeakle and Sarah Wagner Yeakle. Mary married David Urffer on November 26, 1809, and they had seven children. Maryâe(tm)s great-grandfather Christopher Yeakle was approximately 18 years of age when he arrived in Pennsylvania with his Mother in 1734; his father died in Germany. Christopher apprenticed himself to a cooper, and continued this trade throughout his life. Christopher Yeakle built a log-home in 1743 at Cresheim, Germantown Township, Philadelphia, that was his dwelling until the Revolutionary War; he then is said to have purchased property on the summit of Chestnut Hill, PA. Size âe" 19âe Width & 11 ¼âe Length Condition âe" Very Good for Age; Does not contain any holes; Some loss of stitches on a few motifs, or else the Textile was left unfinished This rare PA German Schwenkfelder Sampler is certainly a collectorâe(tm)s item, as these pieces are vastly contained in private and/or museum collections. What a wonderful historical Sampler to add to an existing collection, as it will adorn your walls with grace and beauty for many generations to come!
