Very Rare,Historic American Glass in Very Fine Condition,4 and 13/16ths " High,Open Pontiled,Very crude and Early,Dark Burnished Olive-Black Glass,Arched Face and Sides,Beveled Corners with Smooth Shoulders,"Stoddard Glass House" Snuff Bottle, with a low,no neck, single ring, tooled, flanged, rolled over, rounded, applied collar.A beautiful, very crude snuff bottle, with thousands of large and small bubbles, slag and interior straw marks and tooling, and the same on the exterior. The collar is hand tooled, very thick and lumpy, flanged and smooth on the inside of the collar, and tooled so close to the shoulder in places you can't see w the collar ends, and the slope of the shoulder begins. This bottle has an anomaly I've seen in a few other Stoddard bottles w it has what looks like a snap-case mark near the base on one face, and on the other face no mark but the base line isn't flat like the other side but has a dip into it.The base has tooling lines into it an 1/8th " in marking off a rectangle, then kicking up gradually into a large, jagged open pontil. The bottle would be mint but it was, like so many bottles of this era, opened with an ice pick, and has a light chip on the outside of the collar, and light slivering on the flange.Despite this it displays well in either direction, and is a beautiful, very rare Stoddard piece dug in New England by a late friend, with several other Stoddard bottles, including a masonic flask;but a Stoddard snuff is still a real winner, and seldom seen. The color is so dark and strange as to be almost indescribable,as it is changes subtley in different lights;I.E.Picture #1 was taken indoors with white light, and picture #3 was taken outdoors in natural light.Anyway you look at the bottle it is very crude, beautiful, and certainly has the Stoddard color,as it was also dug very near the old glasshouse in New England.Circa - 1840's
